Introducing the PiLA Book Club: Join Us for an Inspiring Journey with Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora!

July 18, 2024

(July 18, 2024) We are excited to introduce a new initiative that brings together our passionate and diverse community in a unique and enriching way – the PiLA Book Club! This book club aims to foster a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and historical contexts of the regions we serve, while also providing a platform for meaningful discussion and connection among our members.

Why a Book Club?

At PiLA, we believe in the power of stories to enlighten, educate, and inspire. Through our book club, we hope to explore narratives that resonate with our mission and values, broaden our perspectives, and engage in thoughtful dialogue about issues that matter to us and the communities we work with.

Our First Read: Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora

We are delighted to announce that our first book selection is Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora. This poignant and powerful memoir recounts Zamora’s harrowing journey as a nine-year-old child traveling unaccompanied from El Salvador to the United States. Through his eyes, we experience the challenges, fears, and hopes of those who undertake perilous journeys in search of a better life.

Why Solito: A Memoir?

We chose Solito because it aligns closely with PiLA’s mission to foster cross-cultural understanding and support communities in Latin America. Zamora’s memoir provides a firsthand account of the migrant experience, offering invaluable insights into the struggles and triumphs of those seeking new beginnings. It’s a story that reminds us of the importance of empathy, solidarity, and the pursuit of justice – values that are at the heart of PiLA’s work.
