Executive Director, Princeton in Latin America (PiLA): Job Description

Princeton in Latin America (PiLA), now in its sixteenth year of service, matches nonprofit organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean with recent college graduates to serve as Fellows, improving the quality of life and enhancing socioeconomic opportunities in the region. Through this partnership, organizations benefit greatly from the talents, knowledge and ingenuity that our Fellows bring to each position. In turn, Fellows hone leadership and professional skills with the hope that they come to constitute a globalized citizenship dedicated to a participatory and inclusive civil society. POSITION: The Executive Director reports to the PiLA Board of Directors and is accountable for all aspects of PiLA’s operations. The most critical aspects of the Executive Director’s role are the health and safety of our Fellows, donor relations and fundraising, management of PiLA staff, financial oversight, Board reporting and relationships, and building and maintaining relationships with our partner organizations and Princeton University.

PURPOSE: We are seeking a dynamic leader with strong initiative, capable of leading PiLA as we continue to strengthen our fellowship program and plan for strategic growth. The Executive Director will be the public face of PiLA in interacting with Fellows, families, partner organizations, donors, Princeton University, and others. The successful candidate will be a skillful manager and fundraiser, with a strong commitment to the health and safety of our Fellows. This person will also be an eloquent advocate, orally as well as in written materials, for PiLA’s mission to develop an internationalized leadership and citizenry dedicated to the socioeconomic advancement of Latin America and the Caribbean.


  • Demonstrated interest in and experience with young adults and deep familiarity with Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Experienced in fundraising with corporations, individuals and foundations, including familiarity with grant writing and successful prior experience managing logistics for annual benefits or similar fundraising events
  • Effective team leadership and management
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Spanish or Portuguese; ideally both
  • Strong organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultures and of different ages
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint; working knowledge of QuickBooks; client relationship management (CRM) database experience desirable (e.g., Network for Good, Salesforce)
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Willing and available to work occasional nights and weekends throughout the year, as required by the fellowship program cycle and unexpected situations that might arise
  • Willing and available to travel to Latin America and the Caribbean for several weeks each year as allowed by the budget
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, work in a lean nonprofit environment, adjust to sudden shifts in priorities, and maintain a good sense of humor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (include but not limited to):


  • Build a strong team atmosphere and support staff’s professional growth and development
  • Manage one full-time staff member as well as occasional consultants and interns and possible additional staff as PiLA grows in the future
  • Manage budget and administer operational cash flows between PiLA, partner organizations and vendors
  • Work closely with the Treasurer and Finance Committee members on organizational budgets and budget projections, tracking revenue and expenses, payroll, invoicing and tracking payments, creating monthly and quarterly financial reports; arrange for independent audit; filing all appropriate forms with the IRS and state governments


  • Build excitement and commitment on PiLA’s Board for our life-changing fellowship program
  • Liaise with Board President, Board Committees and Fellows’ Advisory Council to coordinate Board meetings and special gatherings, along with accompanying documentation
  • Assist with new Board member recruitment
  • Liaise with Princeton University programs, departments and administration


  • Maintain a preeminent fellowship program and work closely with the Program Officer to plan for strategic growth in the program’s size and scope
  • Oversee and assist Program Officer throughout the fellowship placement cycle (i.e., recruitment, application review, matching, finalizing placements)
  • Oversee and assist Program Officer throughout the year in supporting current Fellows, including regular communication with them and their supervisors, conducting area site visits, and assisting with the organization and presentation of the annual June orientation program for incoming Fellows
  • Oversee health, safety and security policies and procedures, including monitoring advisories and directing institutional responses to crises, such as medical evacuations, natural disasters and political unrest
  • Build strong relationships with existing partner organizations; vet and select new partner organizations
  • Develop strong relationships with PiLA alumni and, in collaboration with the Fellows’ Advisory Council, generate effective strategies for alumni engagement
  • Continue to improve PiLA’s efforts to measure and evaluate the impact of our work


  • As the lead spokesperson for PiLA, actively advocate for our mission nationally and internationally in order to identify funding sources
  • Develop and lead an ongoing fundraising strategy, and oversee donor database
  • Identify, cultivate and manage foundation, corporate and individual donors
  • Manage all fundraising events, including annual benefits
  • Oversee annual appeals, grant applications and grant reporting
  • Oversee website maintenance and development of compelling communications materials for our webpages and social media


  • Full-time employment that requires legal status to work in the US
  • Compensation based upon experience and competitive with similar nonprofit organizations
